That's not really what I do...
I work at a university, but I don't have anything to do with the academics side of things. Not even almost anything to do with them. I work in Student Activities; still, my office is often the first FAU office that people see when they come onto campus, so they assume I can solve all their problems. Here's a conversation that I just had.
Oblivious Man: [he sits down across from my desk, puts his elbows on my desk, moving my paper clip tray.] Hello, I am an FAU student.
Me: Hi, good morning. How can I help you?
Oblivious Man: Well, go on your computer and look up a biology class for me.
Me: ... Excuse me?
Oblivious Man: Yeah. I would like to take a biology course. I am available Wednesday nights.
Me: I can't really help you. I'm with Student Activities, but I can refer you to the right office. You say you're already an FAU student?
Oblivious Man: I was.
Me: Was? or Are?
Oblivious man: Yes, can you just look up the class for me, and then you can register me?
Me: Actually, I'd recommend that you go speak to the Admissions Office, and then they can guide you through the rest of the process. They're right across the way here. Go out these doors, take a right, and it'll be right there.
Oblivious man: [looks at my name tag] You work for FAU?
Me: Yep! Right through those doors and to the right.
Now, take that man as an example, compared to this older man who came in here and asked for "the main office." I could tell he was just trying to enroll in school, and he wasn't really sure what to do. I sent him in the right direction, and I'm sure he'll be very successful in his endeavors.
Also, a student worker who I supervise just came in here to call everyone else "stupid" and cuss. He's seven years older than me, been married for five years, and one of the best workers we have. But it's still not nice to call people stupid. I spent fifteen minutes typing up this post to ridicule a helpless student, but jeeze -- I didn't call him stupid!
